You may have seen the pageant on local TV in September: Young ladies from all across the state, competing for the title of Miss Teen Promise.

But, the Teen Promise program is much more than a pageant, and the woman who created it is our Arkansan of the Week.

Ten years ago, Evangeline Parker was speaking at schools and churches around the state, and noticed something was missing in some of the faces staring back at her.

(Evangeline Parker, Teen Promise) “It seems like the spark had gone out of the girls' eyes. It seemed like they were being more masculine than feminine. I wanted something to not only celebrate who they are, but also help them get an education.”

So, Evangeline says, she prayed over it--and the idea of Teen Promise was born. She used a $1,000 tax refund to get started.

A decade later, her program has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarship money, and helped more than 300 girls come out of their shell--and find a more hopeful future.

The girls go through a ten-week course in the summer, learning etiquette and poise, how to interview for a job, and how to complete a resume.

(Parker) “It's unique because we do an assessment of every participant that comes through the program to find out what the major need is. So, if a young lady has a problem being shy, we work with her on that. If a young lady has, sad to say, anger issues, we work with her on that.”

The success stories are endless Girls who, as Evangeline says, couldn't even look in the mirror and say they liked who they were, until going through the program. Now, those girls are college graduates, and giving back to their communities.

(Parker) “It makes it worth getting up in the morning. It's my life's passion. It's what I love to do. Some people say, ‘Well, you don't have any children.’ I say, ‘Oh, yeah, I have a whole lot of them.’ Every time I turn around, they are involved in something. I'm so proud of that."

Teen Promise is open to any girl, six or older.
